Advent 16: Come to the Source ...

Monday, Dec 16, 2013. Advent is an invitation to change focus. We are invited to realize what is important for our life. We are invited to get to know the Lord.

The Source …

What is it that is in the core of the biblical message? Is it the images and stories, that is important? In Advent time, we are swamped by images of angels, of the Jesus baby, of scenes with shepherds and with Mary and Josef. Is it these images which are important? They can be, if they carry the right message and the right spirit - and they can distract us from the core!

I read in a book of C.S. Lewis recently. He is a great writer. His insight into Christianity is quite amazing - and his intellectual level is high. On the level of thinking about faith, I really like his stories. But I also realize, that it is not the source, which I am reading. The source is the Lord himself, his holy spirit. The source is Jesus, the Christ.

We are often distracted …

**

There are many things which can distract us from the source. In particular, “religion” can distract us. All the things which are carried out by the church can be an obstacle on our way, to get to know the Lord. That is an important observation for all those who like the church, who are involved in it. Let us not be the obstacle, but let us step aside and let God become visible.

God wants to come to us through Jesus. Somehow, Jesus is the focal point of faith. He is the son of men, the son of God. He is the child, which is given to us. He is the “lamb”, which was given for us. He is the perfect sacrifice. There are many terms, many images, many words which try to describe the role of Jesus.

The key point is: if we want to get to know the Lord, we should get to know Jesus. And we should not let other things distract us from him. (Roland Potthast) ... more texts
